Kari Wuhrer sues ABC over pregnancy
Kari Wuhrer, formerly known as Reese Marshall on General Hospital, sued ABC on Thursday, January 12. The catalyst for it all was her character’s sudden death — written into the script just two weeks after she told the network about her pregnancy.
She alleges pregnancy discrimination, sex discrimination, wrongful termination, intentional infliction of emotional distress and four other complaints.
The lawsuit itself opens in a very Hollywood manner: with a dramatic narrative.
“There is a viral pandemic of discriminatory conduct raging through ABC’s daytime soaps. The vile underbelly of the Hollywood Machine encourages female actors to be as beautiful and slim as possible. God forbig that an actress should mar her perfect shape with a pregnancy. If an actress dares to become pregnant, her choice is simple: terminate her pregnancy or be terminated. Little wonder so many of today’s young and aspiring starlets either put childbearing on hold or simply refuse to ever get pregnant.”
